Reminding NASA how cool they are

The sessions we host at Insight Labs have a weird way of pumping people up. Despite having discussed some of their most serious problems for three hours, the representatives of non-profit organizations and government bodies often come away with an exhilarated feeling.

That’s often because of the awesomeness of the solution the Lab devised. But it’s also because more than a dozen smart and influential people just spent three hours of their time demonstrating a deep concern for the organization by bringing the best ideas they have to offer. For three hours, our partner organization is a superstar.

How surprised we were, then, that we could generate a similar feeling at NASA. Didn’t these guys already know how cool they were?

Apparently not. As captured by this InnovationNewsDaily story on MSNBC, part of the task Labs Dean Jeff Leitner faced in the session was reminding NASA of their incredible assets.

“If they were in Silicon Valley, we’d be worshiping them,” Leitner told reporter Jeremy Hsu. “But they’re NASA, so we’re cutting their budget.”

Because of their magnificent brand, widespread legitimacy, and other resources, NASA can start conversations that others can’t. As a Lab participant asked, if NASA invited Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page, and Jeff Bezos to a conference on innovation, would they come?

“The NASA representatives said they didn’t know,” writes Hsu. “‘Of course (they’d come), you’re NASA!’ Leitner and his colleagues responded.”
